Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 5, Activity 3 (Bonus Activity)

Bonus Activity: It’s time to use your imagination to write a short story. I’ve provided you with three different beginnings for a story. Choose your favourite beginning and finish the story. What happens next? You can use your imagination and create any ending that you want. To earn full points, you must post, at least 8-10 sentences, on your blog.

I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then I heard a buzzing sound. It was very similar to an alarm clock, but more quieter. I searched my room, trying to locate the sound. But I just couldn’t put my finger on where it was. I hopped back on my bed, wondering what in the world that sound was. That thought disappeared after realising that it was time for my daily walk.
I jumped off the bed and went downstairs to put my shoes on. “Where’s my phone?” I thought, I never go without my phone. I frantically searched my clothing but nothing. “Mum have you seen my phone?” “No sorry I haven’t!” She replied, I frowned. The last time that I had it, was last night. But I forgot where I put it. I ran back upstairs looking throughout my room, but I just couldn’t find it. Buzz, buzz. There was the sound again. ‘Oh great another problem’ I thought to myself. I sat still, not making a sound. I strained my ears trying to figure out where the sound was coming from.
It seemed that it was coming from underneath me, but how? I got up off the bed, laid on my stomach and looked underneath my bed. “My phone!” I exclaimed. It was sitting underneath my bed, it must’ve fell off my bed. I also figured out what that sound was. It was my alarm telling me that it was time for my walk. I grabbed my jumper and walked downstairs. Out of the front door and went on my walk, holding onto my phone tightly.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 5, Activity 2

Activity 2: Read the following three reviews of books that are really popular right now in Canada. If you had to choose one for Curious Kiwi to read on the plane, which one would you choose? Post the name of the book that you would chose on your blog. Below the title explain why you would choose that book.
Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly Truth

Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Can Greg make it through on his own? Or will he have to face the “ugly truth.”
I would choose Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid - The Ugly Truth. I would choose that book because I have read 2 other books of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series and they were really funny. So I think that this book will be just as funny. I enjoyed how relatable the books are. It also has good morals and teaches us lessons about decision in life.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 5, Activity 1

Activity 1: Think about all of the books that you have read this year and recommend one for Curious Kiwi to read. On your blog list the title and author of the book and then provide a short description of it. What is the book about?

The book that I would recommend is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It was written by J.K Rowling and published in 1997. The book is based around Harry Potter and his life. Harry Potter lives with his Aunty, Uncle and Cousin Dudley. But they all mistreat him. Harry has always known that he is different. One day a giant named Hagrid comes to tell him that he is a wizard and explains about the Wizarding World. Harry starts his first year at Hogwarts Witchcraft & Wizardry, where he makes friends and enemies. But also discovers something, that he has never known about himself.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 4, Activity 3 (Bonus Activity)

Bonus Activity: Make a word poem called a ‘wordle’ using your packing list (i.e. the list of of things you are taking with you on your trip). To make a wordle you need to go to the Wordle website [http://www.wordle.net/create]. Enter the words for all of your items into the box provided and click ‘Go.’ The website will create a wordle for you. Save the wordle and then post it on your blog.

Unfortunately I could not work on Wordle. So I decided to use another site called ‘Tagul.’ it is just as good as Wordle and I would recommend using it. Here is the link: Tagul

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 5, Activity 2

Activity 2: Before you start packing your suitcase you will want to create a list of everything that you will need to bring with you. Most airlines let you bring one big suitcase with you so you’ll have to think carefully about what you want to bring…
On your blog site, post a list of everything that you need to pack for your trip. Put a star (*) beside the 5 items that you think are the most important.

Activity 1: To find out more about the weather in your chosen country log onto the Accu Weather website [http://www.accuweather.com]. Type the name of the capital city of your country into the search bar. It will tell you what the weather is going to be like in your country of choice. On your blog, provide a five day forecast for the weather in the capital city of your chosen country.

To use the XE site you have to complete these four steps:
Step 1 – Enter the price of the airline ticket in the far left box.
Step 2 – Select the currency you want from the drop down menu in the second box.
Step 3 – Select ‘NZD – New Zealand Dollar’ as the currency in the third box.
Step 4 – Click on the blue button with the white arrow. It will take you to a second page that tells you how the ticket will cost in New Zealand Dollars (NZD).

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 3, Activity 2

Activity 2: Imagine that you have been asked to create your very own airline. What would you call it? Design a simple logo for your airline and post it on your blog. You must include a short explanation of your logo below the picture.

This is the logo that I have designed. The words ‘the best of the best’ is its motto. The fern represents all kiwis and New Zealand. The 7 rings represent each continent. You might notice that it is similar to the olympic rings, thats where I got the idea from. Green is North America, Orange is South America, Blue is Europe, Red is Africa, Yellow is Asia, Green is Australia and White is Antarctica. Finally the blue background represents the 5 oceans. My airline is called Kiwi Airlines.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 3, Activity 1

Activity 1: Watch both of the current Air New Zealand safety videos. The first is a video that stars the All Blacks. The second is a video that stars Rhys Darby and Anna Faris (Hollywood actress).  Links for the videos are found below:

Once you have finished watching the videos, go to your blog and list three things that you need to do to stay safe on an airplane.
  1. When you see the fasten seatbelts sign. You must put your seatbelt on. You have to put it across your hips and hear the belt click. If you want to get up then you must lift the lever, to release the belt.air_new_zealand_hobbit_safety_2.jpg
  2. Any loose items that you have, must be safely secured. Either above  your head in the lockers, or beneath the seat in front of you.Image result for plane locker
For emergencies lean on the seat in front of you, with your hands on your face OR you can put your hands beside your head and put your head in between your legs. Make sure to have your feet firmly on the floor.head.PNG

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 2, Activity 3 (Bonus Activity)

Bonus Activity: Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. Have you been to Wellington? If so, please tell us about two things that you did when you were in Wellington. If you haven’t had the opportunity to go to Wellington, follow the link to learn more about this very cool city: Discover Wellington.
On your blog, tell us what two things you would like to do if you had the chance to visit Wellington. Would you go to the botanical gardens or visit the Beehive? Perhaps you would prefer to go shopping on Cuba Street or go out for dinner on Quay Street…
I haven’t gone to Wellington yet, but it is a place that is on my Bucket List. One thing that I would do is go to the Kapiti Four x 4 Adventures. It is a place where you can go Quad Biking through the Akatarawa Forest, Archery, play Petanque, do Horseshoe Pitching and more!Image result for Kapiti Four x 4 Adventures
The second thing that I would do is go to the Otari-Wilton’s Bush Native Botanic Garden & Forest Reserve. It is a place to take a relaxing hike and discover the beautiful nature within the forest. They have other native birds like tuis, kereru, fantails and more.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 1, Day 2, Activity 2

Activity 2: One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.
My Opinion: I definitely think that it should be banned! Bullfighting shouldn’t even be considered a sport at all.
  1. First of all it is basically encouraging more violence against animals. They are killing a bull, I have read that bulls are not usually aggressive animals. But 2 days before the “fight” they are horrendously abused, and that’s why they are so aggressive. I have also read that it is not just bulls who suffer, horses suffer this terrible act to.
  2. Second of all this “sport” just basically encourages violence itself! How can people actually pay money to watch an innocent creature basically be murdered. I believe that everything has a spirit, even animals. These people are killing some of God’s creations and it isn’t fair.
  3. Third of all it is endangering the lives of people. People can actually be killed. What if the men or women who fight have a family? Or have friends who dearly love them? Or they have a mother or father who really need them? This is something to really think about.
I can’t believe that the Spanish Government hasn’t put a stop to it yet! There has to be something done, because it is stupid, horrendous, barbaric and unfair against the bulls. But it is also just encourages violence!Image result for bullfighting bannedDragged away
