Recount: My Sailing Experience!

It was a very sunny day, with a clear blue sky. This was going to be the first day of our Activity Days and I was certain to make the most of it. Everyone was so excited. Lucky that there were only 10 people in this group, otherwise it would of never fit in the van. The first group had already had their turn and when we arrived they were their at the Yacht Club.

When we hopped out we were greeted from our other classmates. After our reunion the first group hopped into the van and waved goodbye. When they left we all got prepared. We were then greeted by our instructor Ruben. Everyone got their life jackets and red coats on and then we all walked down to the beach. There were at least six boats waiting down by the shore. Those were the sail boats. We all surrounded the blue boat and Ruben started explaining and showing us how to use the boat.

There were 2 parts in the boat to work. The steering and the sail. The steering was at the back of the boat, it will control where the boat will go. The sail was at the front of the boat. To position it you need to either pull or release the rope. Ruben showed us how to work the sail properly. Soon enough we were all partnered up and we were taking our boats out into the ocean. I was partnered up with Rachel. Catherine was with Lupe, Pepe was with Joshua and Patrick was with Misiotei. I was in the purple boat. When we got out into the water it was so hard mainly because of the sail. We then got stuck for a while but we eventually got out into the ocean.

It felt so great, sailing. I had completely underestimated it. I thought that it would be so tiring and boring. But really it was a great feeling when the boat was going fast. We finally caught up with the other boats and Ruben was in the motorboat, with Oscar and Ierei. Ruben told us where to go and we followed. Surprisingly no one had fell out of the boat yet. Rachel then had to swap with Ierei. Rachel hopped out and Ierei hopped in. It was harder with Ierei mainly because she hadn’t had much experience.

After a long ride in the water Ruben then told us to go back to the shore. I was disappointed at first but then happy because I was extremely hungry, thirsty and tired. When the boats were close enough to the shore we all hopped out of the boats and dived into the water. Everyone was so happy in the water. We then pulled the boats back to shore and started cleaning up. After cleaning up everyone got changed and we ate our lunch. Everyone was silent and just enjoyed their lunch. I was so exhausted but happy at the same time. So all I could say about that day was that it was a really great experience.

Recount: Manaiakalani Film Festival 2015!

The bus slowly came to a stop and everyone went quiet. “Now can everyone please leave the bus quietly and behave yourselves,” Mrs Middleton announced to everyone. So everyone made their way outside of the bus and walked to the Hoyts. When we arrived to Hoyts it wasn’t quite as packed as I thought that it would be. One class at a time everyone made their way into the Cinema and sat down. But the problem was that their wasn’t enough seats left for our school. So some students had to go to the top seats. I sat next to Pepe, Valensia and Mrs Mafu. Soon after everyone was settled down the lights went low and a man stood at the front of the Cinema. “Welcome everyone to the Manaiakalani Film Festival 2015!” He announced.

After his introduction the first video popped up. It was a Tamaki College student with information about the Film Festival. “The schools that are attending this year are St Pius X Catholic School, Ruapotaka School, Glenbrae School, Glen Innes Primary School, Panmure Bridge School, Pt England School, Saint Patrick’s School, Somerville School, Stonefields School, Tamaki College, Tamaki Primary and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori School.” The student stated, which were 12 schools altogether. “There were about 100 movies that were submitted this year and two-thirds of them are played during the day.” ‘Wow,’ I thought to myself. After her introduction the films finally started.

One by one the movies played. Some of them were better than others. But I had to admit some of those movies were quite good. Especially since these films were only made from Primary and Intermediate students. The last film to run was surprisingly Room 7’s movie, Faith, Hope and Love. Our movie was about our school song Faith, Hope and Love. Which was composed from Deja and her group last year. So when our movie came up I instantly felt so proud because the film was based on our school motto. After our film the Cinemas light brightened up and the cinema was once again filled with voices. So then one by one each school made their way out of the cinema.

We finally made it to the bus and everyone sat back down and chatting again. But I was too tired to even talk so I just sat and looked out of the window. Personally my favourite movies (besides Room 7’s movie) had to be ‘Stay Young’ by Pt England and ‘Rise Heroes’ by Tamaki College. But I was still overall very proud of our school and their films.

Reflection: Kiwi - Sport Week 2

We had Kiwi Sport today again. This lesson was my favourite lesson so far. Mainly because I had fun since the boys and the girls were split up. But we first started off with a passing drill. It was quite complicated though. We get into three lines, then 1 person from each line runs up and passes the ball. Then the second person rolls the ball on the ground and the third person picks it up and passes it back to the first person. Then it repeats again and again, but it has to be at full speed. Then the boys and girls split. We did the same thing that we did last week, but this week our Instructor Kate said that the girls did much better. I really enjoyed this weeks session and I can’t wait for next week!

Reflection: Kiwi Sport - Touch

IMG_3112.JPGToday in the morning block we had our Kiwi Sport which is Touch. We had drills, like the Grid Game, the Amazing Race and Strike and Pass. The Grid Game it taught us how to work as a team and how to catch the ball. The Amazing Race it just helped us to work on our listening skills. The Strike and Pass game taught us how to pass the ball and how to defend a player. But also how to dummy the ball. At first I was nervous but then the games became a lot more fun once you got use to them.
